From November 1st to 2nd, the 2025 Academic Symposium of the Coastal Zone Sustainable Development Branch of the Chinese Society for Oceanography and Limnology was held in the lecture hall of the campus library. The symposium, themed "Coastal Zone Sustainable Development for the Future," attracted over 300 experts, scholars, graduate students, and business representatives from various institutions including the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, the Institute of Oceanology, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, the Institute of Ecology and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Ocean University of China, Xiamen University, East China Normal University, and the First Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources, as well as the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zhang Shudi, Party Secretary of the Campus, and Liu Zhengyi, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Department of the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was chaired by Sheng Yanqing, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Coastal Zone Sustainable Development Branch and Researcher at the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zhang Shudi welcomed the participating experts and scholars, and introduced the significant achievements of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in Weihai over the past 40 years, highlighting its landmark accomplishments in recent years in areas such as integrated sea-air-space observation, cross-domain collaboration, underwater welding, and ecological protection. She expressed her hope that the participants would use this conference as an opportunity to strengthen exchanges, seek cooperation, build consensus through academic discussions, explore pathways through sharing achievements, and jointly promote my country's marine and limnological undertakings to a new level of high-quality development.

In his opening remarks, Liu Zhengyi presented key research initiatives conducted by the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research (YIC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. These initiatives span critical areas including coastal environmental processes, ecological restoration, resource management, blue carbon sequestration, and disaster prevention and mitigation. He emphasized that the conference, revolving around the core theme of "Sustainable Coastal Zone Development," serves as a vital platform for exchanging research outcomes and sharing practical experiences. He expressed confidence that the event would significantly advance the research capabilities of China's coastal zone science community and contribute "Chinese wisdom and solutions" to the sustainable management of coastal zones both regionally and globally.

Academician Li Jinghong of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor at Tsinghua University, and Academician Sun Song of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and Researcher at the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, were invited to deliver keynote reports. They systematically introduced their research progress and achievements on two themes: "Intelligent Bioanalytical Chemistry for Life and Health" and "Harmony between Humans and the Sea: A Paradigm Revolution in Coastal Ecosystem Research—Towards a New Era of Smart-Empowered Integrated Coastal Management." The content closely aligned with the national strategy of building a maritime power and the needs of ecological civilization construction, and achieved interdisciplinary integration from microscopic biological analysis to macroscopic ecosystem management, providing a multi-dimensional and forward-looking academic perspective for sustainable coastal development, which sparked in-depth thinking and lively discussion among the participating scholars.

During the conference report session, 15 experts delivered excellent keynote reports, including Researcher Chen Lingxin from the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Researcher Guan Yafeng from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics; Researcher Liao Chunyang from the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences; Researcher Lei Yanli from the Institute of Oceanology; Researcher Zhang Xin from the Institute of Oceanology; Researchers Qin Wei and Hou Xiyong from the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research; Professor Zhao Jian from Ocean University of China; Professor Jiang Jie from Harbin Institute of Technology (Weihai); Dr. Alan Warren, former director of the Natural History Museum in the UK and member of ISO/TC8/WG15; Professor Ma Yi from the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources; Professor Shi Honghua from Shandong University of Science and Technology; and Professor Guo Jinjia from Ocean University of China.

The conference organized eight parallel sessions around key topics, including "Coastal Ecological Environment Security and Services," "Coastal Environmental Pollution Behavior and Removal," "Coastal Pollutant Detection Technology and Monitoring Equipment," "Smart Ocean and Intelligent Equipment," the "Coastal Health Taishan Forum," and "Coastal Resource Development and Utilization." More than 90 experts and scholars presented their work at these sessions.

The current session of the Coastal Zone Sustainable Development Branch of the Chinese Society for Oceanography and Limnology aims to build a collaborative platform for "basic research, technological innovation, and industrial application," promote in-depth exchanges and cooperation between academia and industry, inject new momentum into the development of marine and limnological science in my country, and contribute Chinese wisdom to global marine ecological protection and sustainable development.
