From November 28 to December 1, 2017 International Symposium on Ocean Science and Technology (ISOST 2017) was held in Qingdao and Weihai. This symposium was hosted by the HIT International School of Ocean and Science engineering. Nearly 20 foreign experts in marine science and engineering from renowned universities and colleges in 10 countries, including Britain, Australia, Canada, Germany and South Korea etc. attended this symposium.

On November 28, ISOST 2017 was opened in Qingdao. The symposium was presided by Professor He Guanghua, vice dean of the International School of Ocean and Science Engineering. Professor Xu Xiaofei, president of HITWH, vice president of HIT, delivered an opening speech. He extended sincere welcome to the visiting experts and introduced the development and achievements of HITWH around teaching, scientific research, student’s cultivation and international education in the past year, elaborated the significant meaning of ISOST, and expressed his wish that visiting experts could fully understand and seek higher level exchanges and cooperation. Professor Atilla Incecik, dean of HIT-ISOSE, briefs the visiting experts on the purpose of the ISOST and the status of ISOSE International Academy.

From November 28 to 29, experts exchanged their views on the five major topics, including marine technology, ship-sea talents cultivation, marine engineering, ocean engineering and marine science. Representatives, from the University of Strathclyde, University of Tasmania of Australia, Busan State University of Korea, Hamburg University of Technology, University of Western Australia, University of Adelaide of Australia, Newfoundland Memorial University of Canada, Kyushu University of Japan, Newcastle University of the United Kingdom, Korea Autonomous University, University of Istanbul and Istanbul University of Science and Technology made special reports on issues related to the development of marine technology, the status quo and existing problems in the training of ship and sea talent, the prospect of offshore engineering.

From November 30 to December 1, the participating experts gathered together in Weihai to discuss such issues as the joint talent cultivation of marine science and technology and scientific research cooperation. The exchange meeting was hosted by Wei Shisheng, vice president of Weihai Campus. President Xu Xiaofei introduced the establishment and development of HITWH. Combining with the strategy of running the university in Weihai, he introduced the achievements in development and current status of the key disciplines construction, talent cultivation, scientific research and international schooling. The participating experts introduced their own universities’ characteristics and discussed the issues on strengthening international cooperation, developing naval architecture and ocean engineering, promoting innovative and entrepreneurial activities and improving students' ability in scientific research.

The symposium also reached an agreement on Master Program instructed in English with Hamburg University of Science and Technology in Germany, and initiated the negotiation with Newfoundland Memorial University over joint school projects. At the same time, two foreign professors show their willing to work as adjunct professors.

This International symposium is an important part of the 2017 Qingdao International Technology Transfer Conference and Ao Shan Eurasian Science and Technology Forum which is jointly organized by Qingdao Municipal People's Government, Qingdao Science and Technology Bureau, Qingdao Jimo District People's Government, Qingdao Blue Valley Authority and Harbin Institute of Technology. Not only Qingdao municipal government, but also domestic and foreign experts, enterprises and research institutes attach great importance to the symposium. This is of great significance in promoting the capability of scientific research and development of marine science and technology, enhancing the influence of the International School of Ocean and Science Engineering expanding the internationalization level of our campus.

Foreign experts also visited the Harbin Institute of Technology Museum(Weihai), Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Special Welding Technology, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Modern Digital Medical Equipment, University Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base, etc.
