By recruiting more well-qualified Ph.Ds and sending more teachers studying abroad, the school’s faculty continues improving in term of quality and is increasingly matched in terms of age.

School of Computer Science and Technology

The computer specialty of HIT Weihai was founded in 1989 and developed into the School of Computer Science and Technology (SCST) in 2004. Ever since its establishment, SCST has been an important part of the computer discipline of the HIT system. This includes the National Key Primary Discipline of Computer Science and Technology and the Primary Discipline of Software Engineering, which offers master’s as well as doctoral programs. The School of Software (SS) was established in 2004 and the discipline of Computer Application Technology was listed as one of the key disciplines in Shandong province’s “11th Five-Year Plan” in 2006.

Currently, the SCST & SS has 54 full-time faculty members, including 11 professors, 5 doctoral advisors, 18 associate professors, 1 Provincial Famous Teacher Award winner, and 1 Leading Teacher of HIT. The School also has 5 professors serving in both the Harbin campus and the Weihai campus, including 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), 1 scholar supported by the New Century Excellent Talent Program of the Ministry of Education of China (MOE), and 1 HIT Famous Teacher Award winner. Additionally, SCST & SS has 6 part-time professors from some of the most renowned universities and leading research institutes either at home or abroad, such as, among others, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Manchester, and University of Pavia. 2 of these professors are distinguished experts recruited by the national Thousand Talents Plan. The School offers 3 undergraduate programs, namely Computer Science and Technology, Information Security, and Software Engineering, and has an enrollment of over 1,300 undergraduates and nearly 100 graduate students.

School of Marine Science and Technology

School of Marine Science and Technology was established in 2011 on the site of “Department of Marine Resources and Environmental Engineering”--founded in 2000, and then renamed as Oceanography Institute in 2004.

From its beginning, School of Marine Science and Technology has received preferential support from the government. With the resource conformity and development, School of Marine Science and Technology has developed into a renowned multi-disciplinary school with science, engineering and research as its core.  The existing teaching and administrative staff of 69 people includes 49 full-time teachers and 11 experiment teachers.  The composition of full-time teachers includes 12 professors, 22 associate professors and 15 lecturers. Among them, 1 is new century talent, 9 are Ph.D supervisor, 25 are supervisor of postgraduate, 80% of the full-time teachers have doctor degree and 25% of the full-time teachers have the experience of studying abroad or more than one year experience of visiting scholar.  In addition, young scientists, with overseas research experience are introduced for the promotion of academic research and education. This facilitates the formation of a high level of teaching, strong research ability of teaching staff.

So far, these disciplines, including Environmental engineering, Bioengineering, Chemical engineering and technology and Marine pharmaceuticals and food engineering, recruit undergraduate students. Currently, enrolled undergraduates, master degree candidates and doctoral degree candidates are around 1000, 80 and 10 people, respectively.
